How to tie your school tie

Progressing from primary school to secondary school can come with a lot of changes and challenges, one challenge being the need to adapt to a new uniform which includes a traditional tie. If your child has never had to wear a tie before, this could be a source of stress and frustration in a time of already heightened emotion.

To help ease the pressure of adapting to a new uniform, we have put together an easy step by step guide to help teach your child how to tie their school tie, so they are well prepared before the start of the new school year.

Half Windsor Knot

The Half-Windsor Knot is an extremely versatile and simple knot to do, that ensures you will look smart and ready for the day. Watch the easy to follow video below created Youtube channel How to tie a tie, or follow our step by step instructions beneath.

  1. Start with the wide end of the tie on the right and the small end on the left.
  2. The tip of the small end should rest slightly above your belly button.
  3. Wide end over the small end to the left.
  4. Under the small end and to the right.
  5. Up to the centre, towards neck loop.
  6. Through the neck loop and to the left.
  7. Across the front, over to the right.
  8. Up into the neck loop from underneath.
  9. Down through the loop you’ve just created on the front.
  10. Tighten the knot by pulling down on the wide end.
  11. Slide the knot up and adjust.
